What is trauma-informed therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy recognizes how chronic stress, relational harm, and past experiences shape the nervous system, beliefs, and sense of safety. Rather than focusing on "fixing" symptoms, we prioritize creating a calm, respectful space where healing can unfold at a pace that feels manageable. You are always in control of what we discuss and how we proceed.

Do I need to talk about my trauma?

Not necessarily. Healing does not require retelling or reliving painful experiences. Therapy at Harbor Light Counseling AZ focuses on safety, regulation, and meaning-making. If and when you choose to explore past experiences, we do so gently and collaboratively, never by pushing or rushing.

What kinds of concerns do you help with?

We work with adults healing from complex trauma, including experiences such as childhood emotional neglect, chronic stress, relational trauma, and long-term feelings of overwhelm and disconnection. Many clients come to therapy feeling exhausted from coping or unsure why life feels so hard despite "functioning."

What does a typical session look like?

Sessions are collaborative and paced. We may focus on grounding noticing patterns, making meaning, or building emotional steadiness. Some sessions feel reflective while other sessions feel practical or supportive. There is no expectation to perform, explain perfectly, or make progress quickly.

How long does therapy last?

There is no one-size-fits-all set limit. Complex trauma healing is not linear, and therapy is adapted to your needs and goals. Some clients benefit from longer-term support, while others come for a specific phase of healing.

Is therapy here a good fit if I feel overwhelmed easily?

Yes. Care at Harbor Light Counseling AZ is intentionally designed to feel containing and gentle. If you are sensitive to intensity or have had experiences of therapy feeling too fast or overwhelming, we can move slowly and check in often.

Do you offer consultation or supervision?

Yes. Professional consultation or supervision is available for clinicians and organizations seeking trauma-informed support through www.drashleyshulski.com.

*Consultation and supervision services are not available to current clients or past clients.*
